It was recently announced that TMP Worldwide Advertising and Communications, the very company that produces this and many other must-read blogs, has just become the largest independent recruitment advertising agency in the world.
How did this happen? And just as important, how are we the largest? By office square footage? Combined mass of the employee population? Or – is it that the world itself has somehow shrunk like a small-scale neutron star, leaving us overly large by default?
Oh no, fellow members of the Hair Club for Cynics, it is nothing like that at all. TMP Worldwide has spun off from Monster Worldwide, proud parent to Monster. TMP Worldwide is now a privately-held company backed by Veronis Suhler Stevenson (www.vss.com) or VSS as we like to call them (help – it’s raining acronyms).
In honor of this auspicious occasion, the next paragraph will be entirely composed as an acronym (but not just any acronym, the largest independent acronym in the world).
(Okay, okay, here’s the translation.)
Veronis Suhler Stevenson is a New York and London-based private equity and mezzanine capital fund management company dedicated to investing in the media, communications, information, and education industries in North America and Europe.
VSS invests in companies that have a proven track record of success, an experienced, forward-thinking management team, and assets that make them well-positioned for future growth, both internally and through add-on acquisitions.
No wonder they wanted our company – that sounds just like us.
Seriously, I’m psyched. We’ll have purity of focus backed by a company that puts major resources into its companies (200 add-on acquisitions for over 46 platform companies).
And, of course, there are the new company uniforms (a cotton-polyester blend that is form-fitting, yet breathable).
Look, being part of Monster Worldwide was fun while it lasted. Those of us at TMP Worldwide got to play the leading role in growing what is now the number one brand in global online career sites.
But it’s time to move on.
This company is really a compilation of very smart people who each have their own unique talent. Some are wildly imaginative – futurists with a focus. Some are operationally amazing – Rome might have been built in a day if these folks were there. And some are so service-oriented they see agency and client as the same entity.
Let me close with this. People always ask, “What does TMP stand for?” Well, when the company was founded in 1967, it stood for Telephone Marketing Programs. But that was almost 40 years ago, and a lot has changed. Today, TMP stands for something else. It stands for independence.
